Abandon
The Players: Katie Holmes, Benjamin Bratt, Charlie Hunnam, Zooey Deschanel, Gabrielle Union; directed by Stephen Gaghan
The Skinny: Catherine Burke (Holmes) is an average college student under pressure from exams and completion of her thesis. To complicate matters, a detective (Bratt) starts asking questions about the disappearance of Catherine’s boyfriend (Hunnam) two years ago, a young man whose memory still haunts and obsesses her. To top it off, the boy’s disappearance may be connected to another disappearance from the campus.
The Bottom Line: The lovely (and we think) talented Holmes hasn’t had a chance to truly shine in a feature film, having had interesting but small roles in Wonder Boys and The Ice Storm. Can she successfully move beyond the soapy TV drama Dawson’s Creek and play a big-screen lead? Stay tuned.
Opens: Oct. 18
