2002 Fall Movie Guide — Frida

Frida

The Players: Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, Antonio Banderas, Edward Norton, Ashley Judd, Roger Rees, Geoffrey Rush; directed by Julie Taymor (Titus)

The Skinny: This biopic details the life of Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo (Hayek), beginning with her crippling bus accident to her complex and tumultuous marriage to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (Molina) to her encounters with such intellectuals as Leon Trotsky (Rush), muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros (Banderas), photographer Tina Modotti (Judd) and even Nelson Rockefeller (Norton).

The Bottom Line: This labor of love is all Hayek. It took the actress six long years to get the story of the Frida Kahlo to the big screen, fighting to be a producer and dealing with many rival projects with names like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez attached. Hayek even elicited the help of her real-life loveNorton to help write the screenplay. Let’s hope all that hard work pays off.
