2002 Fall Movie Guide — Solaris

Solaris

The Players: George Clooney, Natascha McElhone, Jeremy Davies, Viola Davis; directed by Steven Soderbergh

The Skinny: Solaris is based upon the 1961 novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem (which Andrew Tarkovsky also adapted in 1972). In a nutshell, Clooney plays a widowed psychologist sent up to a space station orbiting the watery planet Solaris to investigate some strange goings-on–namely, the death of one crewmember on an expedition to the planet and the mysterious appearances of other people aboard ship like the widower’s late wife. “I see dead people in outer space.”

The Bottom Line: Soderbergh, who took over the film after James Cameron stepped aside, has described this film as “a combination of 2001 and Last Tango in Paris. Sounds chillingly sexy.
