2002 Fall Movie Guide — Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama

The Players: Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, Jean Smart, Josh Lucas, Ethan Embry, Candice Bergen, Mary Kay Place, Fred Ward; directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After).

The Skinny: New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Witherspoon) has it all, including the love of the city’s most eligible bachelor (Dempsey). There’s only one thing standing in the way of her marrying the man of her dreams–her redneck husband (Lucas) back in her Alabama hometown who won’t grant her a divorce. Determined to get what she wants, she goes back to the South and discovers she is closer to her roots than she likes to believe.

The Bottom Line: Two words for why this film will probably make some bucks: Reese Witherspoon. The girl is on a roll and even though the story sounds pretty standard, you can bet the winsome actress will effect it with charm.
