DO IT TODAY: ‘Glee’ Premiere

Glee Premiere
(Tuesday, May 19, 2009)

This show is gonna be huge. Huge! It’s following the penultimate episode of American Idol — and it more than deserves this fantasy spot in TV lineup. From the folks that brought us Nip/Tuck, it’s about a high-school glee club, and like all glee clubs, it was destined to rot in Dork Hell (looks a little like the inside of a locker, we presume) … until a superrad teacher named Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) came up with this bright idea: Get the football quarterback to join the glee club. Like, now. Sure, it echoes High School Musical something awful, but where HSM was safe and, well, fake, Glee is hilarious, hip, dark, clever, and dare we say … phenomenal. The student cast of unknowns are incredibly full — and likeable! — characters: superdiva Mercedes, emo-guitarist Arty, the sweeping soprano Kurt, the punky Tina, the egomaniac Rachel, plus the oh-so-handsome footballer Finn. The conceited beeyotch of a cheerleading coach needs no introduction: Best in Show‘s Jane Lynch. We’re cool to bet that this (now) pitch-imperfect collective will make it to the Nationals by summer’s end.
