DO IT TODAY: ‘Moon’

Moon
(Friday, June 12, 2009)

Let it be said that we’re mad for Sam Rockwell. And Moon is more or less a movie starring just Rockwell himself — so why wouldn’t it be a must-see? He’s an astronaut who’s been confined to almost three years on the moon, mining some need-it-now minerals to fuse clean energy. Needless to say, it’s a lonely gig. His contract is up in two weeks, but the alienation from Earth — hello, even the sattelite’s down and heartaching banter with the wife is not an option — becomes just too much to bear. Whether he falls into a bottomless crater, we won’t say, but this is a movie with a twist — a twist that’s well-orchestrated and good to its audience. We can’t help but draw similarities to Tom Hanks‘ isolated island stint in Cast Away, but the comparing ends just before we bring Wilson the ball into review. The film, directed by newbie Duncan Jones (David Bowie‘s son), is amazingly eerie, with an odd blend of sci-fi and a tear-jerker. We have no words for the out-loud conversations Rockwell has with himself — it reminds us of the lies we tell ourselves, but just in our heads. (In LA and NYC theaters; other cities throughout the summer)
