Fox Gets Funny

Thank heaven for Fox.

If it wasn’t for the network shaking things up a bit in the comedy categories, the nominations would probably be the the same year after year. Fox started its most recent stirring up of the comedy categories two years ago when Malcolm in the Middle elbowed its bratty little way past Frasiers and Everybody Loves Raymond to win five comedy awards (best series honors would have to wait until 2001, though).

This year, it’s The Bernie Mac Show‘s turn. The new series received two nominations, including best lead actor in a comedy and outstanding writing for a comedy series.

Fox received a total of 33 nods when the 54th Annual Emmy Awards were announced (six less than last year), including outstanding actress in a comedy series (Jane Kaczmarek for Malcolm in the Middle), outstanding supporting actor in a comedy (Bryan Cranston for Malcolm in the Middle) and outstanding lead actor in a drama series (Kiefer Sutherland for 24).

The most prestigious nomination for the network, however, has to be 24‘s nod for outstanding drama series. The show is up against two newbies in this category, HBO’s Six Feet Under and CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and two juggernauts, NBC’s Law & Order and last year’s winner The West Wing.
