 Confessions
of a Dangerous Mind
While gaining notoriety as a dynamic television producer by creating such shows as The Newlywed Game and the self-hosted The Gong Show, an energetic Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell) also finds himself being lured into the dangerous world of the CIA as an operative and assassin. He basks in the glamour of his two worlds of entertainment and espionage until things start to fall apart, when he receives mass criticism from the public on his shows and finds himself marked for death by an operative. Barris must regain control of his life–both of them. Directed by and also starring George Clooney
What’s
Cool:
  • Commentary by director George Clooney
  • “Making of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” featurette
  • “The Real Chuck Barris,” interviews with Chuck Barris and others
  • Deleted scenes
  • 6 Gong Show acts re-created for the movie
  • Sam Rockwell’s screen tests
From
Our Review:
Making his directorial debut,
George Clooney delivers a highly stylized biopic that showcases the
confessions of an absurd mind rather than a dangerous one. The story
is about as gripping as a Gong Show performance by Gene Gene
the Dancing Machine.

 Bulletproof
Monk
The Monk (Chow Yun-Fat) is a Zen-calm martial arts master whose duty has been to protect a powerful ancient scroll until he can find its next guardian. This quest brings him to New York City where, to his disbelief, it appears his successor is a smart-mouthed pickpocket named Kar (Seann William Scott). As the Monk instructs Kar, the unlikely duo becomes partners in protecting the scroll–and mankind–from a power monger who’s been after it for 60 years.
What’s
Cool:
  • Commentary by director Paul Hunter
  • Deleted scenes with alternate ending
  • Featurettes: “The Tao of Monk” and “The Monk Unrobed”

From
Our Review:
Bulletproof Monk won’t offer any enlightenment, but thanks to Chow Yun-Fat, it isn’t a total waste of time.

 View
From the Top
A comedy centering around Donna (Gwyneth Paltrow), a young woman from meager beginnings, who has high hopes for the future and dreams of becoming a first-class international flight attendant. The flight to success, though, is rarely smooth, and as she begins her trip she encounters more turbulence than even she bargained for. Will she be forced to leave her real dreams behind, or will she embark on a journey of a lifetime? Also stars Christina Applegate.
What’s
Cool:
  • “History of the Flight Attendant” featurette
  • “A Journey Inside View From The Top” featurette

From
Our Review:
The experience of watching
this movie is a lot like commercial air travel: the flight attendants
try to make your experience as pleasant as possible, but it’s still
a long, dull ride in a small seat.

 The
Core
For reasons unknown, the earth’s inner core has stopped rotating, causing the planet’s electromagnetic field to rapidly deteriorate. Scrambling to resolve the crisis, government and military officials call upon geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) and a team of the world’s most gifted scientists to travel into the earth’s core in a subterranean craft piloted by two terranauts (Hilary Swank and Bruce Greenwood). Their mission: detonate a nuclear device that will reactivate the core and save the world from massive destruction.
What’s
Cool:
  • Commentary by director Jon Amiel
  • Deleted and extended scenes with director commentary
  • “To the Core and Back: The Making of The Core” featurette
  • “Deconstruction of the Visual Effects:” a group of shorts that delve into CGI and practical effects

From
Our Review:
The Core doesn’t rise
above schlocky predecessors such as Deep Impact and Armageddon.
The film’s formulaic script is too predictable and the special effects
are unimpressive.

 Malibu’s
Most Wanted
Brad Gluckman (Jamie Kennedy) calls himself B-Rad and sees himself as the phattest rapper in Malibu, much to the chagrin of his father, who is busy campaigning to be the next governor of California. Also stars Anthony Anderson, Taye Diggs and Ryan O’Neal.
What’s
Cool:
  • Commentary by stars Jamie Kennedy, Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall and director John Whitesell
  • Deleted scenes and alternate endings

From
Our Review:
In Malibu’s Most Wanted, Jamie Kennedy’s white suburban rapper persona makes a smooth leap from television skit to big screen. The result is a laugh-a-minute, surprisingly fun ride.
