Singer and fashion designer Gwen Stefani, for refusing to be compared to teen stars such as Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, because the pop queen’s been in the music biz longer than they’ve been alive. “I’ve been in this business for 18 years, they’re 18,” the 35-year-old No Doubt singer says. “It feels really good to get to a point where you have a history, and no matter what people say about you, they can’t erase your history. That’s what I did and that’s why I’ve ended up here.”
2. Youthful naiveté, for entertaining us. Disney’s breakout cutie Hilary Duff on why she makes sure she always has her cell phone with her: “Would you ever use a payphone? Those are gross, who uses those?”
3. Actor Terrence Howard, for being named the ‘Most Valuable Player of the Summer’ by Entertainment Weekly. Howard has turned out critically acclaimed performances this season in Crash, Hustle & Flow and Four Brothers.
4. Four Brothers star Mark Wahlberg, for throwing vanity out the window and holding onto a third nipple. Wahlberg spent nine years considering surgery to remove it but has since grown to love his body, including the spare pink protrusion. “I’ve come to embrace it,” the rapper-turned-actor said. “That thing’s my prized possession.”
5. Exuberant decadence and rap mogul/State Property 2 star Damon Dash, for admitting he employs two assistants to keep his collection of more than 1,000 pairs of shoes in order.
6. Celeb weekly People magazine, for bucking exuberant decadence. According to PageSix.com, People yanked its sponsorship for Jessica and Ashlee Simpson‘s MTV Video Music Awards after-party in Miami on Aug. 28 because of the Dukes of Hazzard star’s outrageous demands, including $20,000 for hair and make-up, and over 30 rooms at the Setai, to name a few. But a Simpson representative told the gossip site the singing sisters were unable to party with People because of other sponsors involved with the event. It would have created conflicts with Jessica‘s master licensing deal and Ashlee‘s contract with Thermasilk.
7. Aussie singer and Grease star Olivia Newton-John, for keeping it together in the face of adversity. The star and breast cancer survivor has recorded a musical interpretation of poet Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman to raise awareness about the deadly disease. Just this week, Netwon-John publicly announced her long-term partner, American cameraman Patrick Mcdermott, has been missing for almost two months.
8. British hottie and celebrity mom Elizabeth Hurley, for launching a line of organic baby food. The 40-year-old face of Estee Lauder, who launched the swimwear line Elizabeth Hurley Beach earlier this year, said her 3-year-old Damian inspired her. “I found all I wanted to do was give Damian perfect, unmodified food,” she said. “It would be wonderful to come up with good, maybe even convenience food, which is really healthy, low-calorie, organic and delicious.”
9. TV producer and Sex and the City creator Darren Star, for snatching up author Candace Bushnell’s latest novel. In a bid to repeat the TV show’s success. Star has bought the rights to Lipstick Jungle from the real-life Carrie Bradshaw, whose novel inspired the seminal HBO series. The story revolves around three powerful New York women–a fashion editor, a fashion designer and a producer. Production on the skein in set to begin next year.
10. Beloved Archie comic character Veronica Lodge, for having such a powerful impact on pop culture. Archie Comics Publications is suing Australian pop newcomers The Veronicas and the Warner Music Group, claiming their band’s name infringes the copyright of the snooty, black-aired Veronica Lodge. In actuality, the comic company believes The Veronica’s name will create confusion among their readers and interferes with its’ plans to create another music group called the Archies.
