White Was the New Black: The Best Dressed at the 64th Annual Golden Globes

Although Beverly Hills was about as wintry as it gets on the day of the 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards, it still wasn’t quite cold enough for snowfall, so the stars took it upon themselves to blanket the red carpet in white.

Yes, for the second year in a row the celebs have eschewed the once-typical sea of black outside awards shows in favor of the opposite color—strict adherents to Labor Day rules be damned. And it’s Greek to us why the goddess gown trend had so many stars making like Mighty Aphrodites, but we were love-struck all the same. The chilly day produced many looks that cooked, as you’ll find in Hollywood.com’s guide to Golden Globes glam.

Hollywood.com’s Couture Champion: YELLO! Reese Witherspoon’s eye-catching canary-yellow embellished brocade cocktail dress designed by Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci—perfectly hued to match her razor-cut blonde bangs, softened by her romantic Covergirl makeup, and discreetly blinged by a well-chosen Van Cleef & Arpels cuff—is our choice for the most fantastic frock at the Globes. While not as dramatic as some of the other gowns on the red carpet, this simple, elegant stunner nevertheless made some very bold statements, not the least of which the newly single Reese is sleeker and sexier than we’ve ever seen her yet still carries herself with class—simply put, she’s the anti-Britney. “I decided to wear a very new dress,” she explained, fully recovered from last year’s Globes dress debacle, when her “vintage” Chanel was previously worn by another blonde star.

Ali LarterThe Ravishing Runner-Up: Ali Larter was a our haute couture Hero in a Reem Acra creation she deemed the color of a creamsicle, v-necked with a capital V and accessorized with a light gold crystal Chambige clutch by Daniel Swarovski and Neil Lane platinum jewelry. Ali told Hollywood.com she had been debating between this dress and another minty green gown, deciding the morning of the Globes “because you don’t know if you’re going to wake up feeling really feisty or if you’re going to wake up feeling a little bit more calm.” Clearly, she was creamy and dreamy that morning.

Hayden PanettiereHayden Panettiere’s fashion sense proved indestructible as she graduated from cheerleader to Grecian goddess in Monique Lhuillier’s a silk white chiffon strapless pleated bodice gown with an antiqued diamond jeweled belt by, Chopard’s pear-shaped emerald drop earrings, matching ring and a jeweled purse with a front that slides down to reveal a mirror. “I’ve been showing the cameramen themselves,” she said impishly on the red carpet. “They’re getting mad at me.” Hayden told Hollywood.com she chose from a plethora of dresses “by trying them on and seeing which ones I liked and what vibe I wanted and what made me feel good and I think I got the one. It’s about how you feel in something. It doesn’t matter how you look all the time.” Except when you look this good.

Jennifer HudsonJennifer Hudson’s choice of Vera Wang’s navy V-neck gown with short sleeves hit a major high note. “Once I saw the dress, that was it,” said Jennifer. “It is comfortable, it is gorgeous. I like to think I just think it fits my person, so that’s why I picked it.”

Teri Hatcher admitted that her Roberto Cavalli creation “may have a little ‘embrace your inner goddess’ thing going,” and we answered the call to worship. Brightening her whiteness were David Yurman jewels and a Daniel Swarovski clutch.

“I really love this dress,” said Penelope Cruz of her cleavage-friendly scoop-front Chanel Couture gown designed “for me by my friend Karl Lagerfeld,” with a delicate ruffle around the neck, belted with a cross Penelope Cruzstudded with diamonds the size of bottle caps, which she matched with Chopard’s yellow and white diamond flower earrings and a oval-shaped yellow diamond ring. “I decide very quickly,” she told Hollywood.com of her dress-choosing prowess. “I know what I like and what I don’t. I don’t like putting too much time into deciding the clothes. I have great people that help me, but I like deciding at the end what I am going to do.”

Love it or loathe it, Cate Blanchett stirred some noteworthy scandal in her black off-the-shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen with lace sleeves, a delicate jeweled belt and an asymmetrical hem, Roger Vivier sandals, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Eva Longoria“I’ve never worn navy and I love it,” said Eva Longoria of her backless navy blue gown, with jeweled straps and bustline by Emanuel Ungaro, but for her the ensemble’s most important facet was the one-of-a-kind bling on her finger, the 248-diamond engagement ring designed for her by her fiancé Tony Parker and jeweler Jean Dousset (“Retail value—I don’t know,” she said coyly). Adding to the personal touch was her flattering soft updo by her hairstylist pal Ken Paves.

America FerreraForget Ugly Betty and meet America the Beautiful: America Ferrera’s deep indigo draped silk chiffon gown was designed by her pal Brian Reyes. “We collaborated on this dress,” she said, proving she really does know a thing or two about high fashion. “I liked the color and he liked the style.” She left Betty’s poncho at home in favor of earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. More bling by Fred Leighton and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Naomi Watts unveiled her custom designed strapless pale turquoise Gucci gown with elaborately patterned metal beadwork around the bust and down the sides, subtly color coordinated to the cosmetic palette created by Dior makeup artist Pati Dubroff.

Sheryl CrowWe were plum crazy over Sheryl Crow’s purple strapless taffeta gown by Elie Saab with a bow at the bust, bracelets, and patterned Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings. “I probably tried on 10 or 12 gowns,” said Sheryl. “Every one of them was gorgeous this year.” And thankfully, style won out over comfort when she opted for classic heels instead of a warmer option. “I was looking for plum-colored Uggs,” she joked.

There was nothing little or childlike about Kate Winslet’s ivory white strapless dress with a ribbed chest by Azarro, an understated stunner that she accentuated with diamond’s–Chopard’s heart-shaped diamond pendant, matching bracelet and cluster earrings along with a round diamond bracelet—and delicate Dior makeup made racy with deep plum lipstick.

Jennifer Lopez“My husband loved it,” said Jennifer Lopez of her Athens-inspired off the shoulder Marchesa frock that got Marc Anthony as hot and bothered as Mount Vesuvius. “That’s usually the deciding factor.”

With her dramatically swept-back locks and white Versace a Versace high-neck gown with an open back, silver trim with dark bar patterns on the left and right sides, the extra-cool weather prompted Ellen Pompeo to opt for a wintery snow queen theme. “It’s cold and it’s white,” the usually Grey star explained—and we could tell by the gauzy gown’s propensity to reveal that there was a little, er, nip in the air.

Emily Blunt“You can’t wear a sack,” but no Prada for Emily Blunt, who may have played a failed fashionista but needed a little rehearsal to enunciate the name of her exquisitely curve-conscious couturier. “This is vintage Herve Leger. Did I say that right? I have been practicing,” she told Hollywood.com. No fashion victim herself, she chose the dress “because I thought it was timeless and my boobs looked good in it. Honestly, that was why.” Blunt indeed—and totally right.

It was unseasonably chilly on the red carpet, but Katherine Heigl raised temperatures in a black strapless taffeta gown with dramatic tulle fishtail hem and train by Escada, which she matched with Jimmy Choo shoes, Ryan jewels and a romantic makeup palette from Chanel.

Jessica BielShh! Jessica Biel’s bodaciously buffed bod looked so sexy in Valentino’s silver-beaded, open-backed dress with sparkly spaghetti straps matched with stunning diamond earrings in pinecone patterns that we don’t feel the need to tell her Hilary Swank wore the same stunner a few years back.

Hilary SwankShe’s dressed in black but, no, that’s not a dahlia in Hilary Swank’s hair it’s Chopard’s amazing diamond orchid brooch featuring 33 carats of white diamonds enhanced by a 20 carat brown briolette diamond at the center. Crowning her Chanel Couture fitted black spaghetti strap dress with a bow-tie waist and strappy Jimmy Choos, the look was killer.

Forget the Pursuit—Will Smith’s already found Happyness in his wife’s Golden Globes gown. “She’s just looking so peachy to me—It’s like peach with a bronze pop!” he said of Jada Pinkett Smith’s tasty pleated Armani Privé gown.

Brad Pitt and Angelina JolieBest Dressed Couple They’re both so unbelievably beautiful, it’s impossible to decide who is whom’s arm candy and when in the Brad PittAngelina Jolie equation Angie accessorizes Brad’s bicep in a custom strapless gray chiffon gown by St. John couture and yellow diamonds, while Brad encircles Angie’s waist with an arm clad in a classic J. Lindeberg tux. All we can say is adopt us, please.
