Winter Movie Guide 2002: “Maid in Manhattan”

Maid In Manhattan

The Players: Jennifer Lopez, Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson; directed by Wayne Wang (Anywhere But Here, The Joy Luck Club)

The Skinny: In this Cinderella story, two people from opposite sides of the track, fall madly in love despite–or perhaps because of–their differences. Lopez is Marisa Ventura, a street-savvy, single mother who lives in the Bronx and works as a maid in a high-class Manhattan hotel. There she meets hotel guest Christopher Hall (Fiennes), a handsome, wealthy heir to an American political dynasty who mistakes her for a guest as well. Sparks fly, she loses the glass slipper and Prince Charming helps her find it.

The Bottom Line: J. Lo‘s batting average has gone down with her recent string of so-so films including Angel Eyes and Enough. Maybe a sweet romantic comedy, labeled as another Pretty Woman, is just what she needs to spruce things up. Hmm, we’ll see.
