Winter Movie Guide 2002: “The Antwone Fisher Story”

The Antwone Fisher Story

The Players: Denzel Washington and introducing Derek Luke; directed
by Denzel Washington

The Skinny: Based on a true story, this biopic centers on Antwone
“Fish” Fisher (Luke), a man who overcame great odds to eventually become an
acclaimed writer and Hollywood producer. As an angry young man about to get kicked
out of the Navy, he is sent to Dr. Jerome Davenport (Washington), a naval
psychiatrist who attempts to get at the root of Fisher’s anger and uncovers a horrific childhood rife with abuse. With Davenport’s help,
Fisher turns his life around and embarks on a search to find the
family that abandoned him as a baby.

The Bottom Line:The red-hot Washington has chosen a small, personal
film as his directorial debut, and goes out on a limb casting virtual
unknowns, including his lead actor. Although the film seems a little
like Good Will Hunting, it could still get Oscar notice in the
acting department.
