Winter Movie Guide 2003: “Gods and Generals”

Gods and Generals

The Players: Robert Duvall, Stephen Lang, Jeff Daniels, Mira Sorvino; directed by Ronald Maxwell (Gettysburg)

The Skinny: The screen adaptation of Jeff Shaara’s best-selling novel, this is a dramatic look back at the America’s bloodiest conflict–the Civil War. It showcases heroes of both sides, such as Robert E. Lee (Duvall], Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Daniels) and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson (Lang), and the effects the war had on their families as well.

The Bottom Line: Duvall‘s getting a little long in the tooth, but even still, he and the rest of this promising cast, plus the fact that it’s been awhile since we’ve seen a civil war epic on-screen, make this intriguing.
