10 Facts You Never Knew About ‘The Devil Wears Prada’

Happy Birthday to The Devil Wears PradaIt’s been a decade since Meryl Streep graced the big screen as Miranda Priestly. To celebrate every year that’s it been out, here are 10 facts you may not have known about The Devil Wears Prada!
1. Miranda Priestly is assumed to be based on Anna Wintour who is the editor-in-chief of Vogue.
Upon obtaining her first editorship in 1985, she replaced more staffers than any previous editor which earned her the nickname “Nuclear Wintour”. The editors who managed to stay on board refer to the period as “The Wintour of Our Discontent.” Wintour showed up the premiere of the film dressed head to toe in Prada.
2. On the first day of filming, Meryl Streep apparently told Anne Hathaway, “I think you’re perfect for the role. I’m so happy we’re going to be working together.”
Streep then paused and followed up with, “That’s the last nice thing I’ll say to you.” and it was.
3. The movie was filmed over 57 days in New York and Paris.

The budget of the film was $35 million.

4. Although many fashion designers allowed their clothes to be used in the film, only Valentino Garavani made an appearance.
According the the New York Post, the film had a costume budget of only a $100,000 but thanks to the generosity of the fashion industry, the film was able to use at least $1 million worth of clothing.
5. Meryl Streep donated her wardrobe from the film to a charity auction.
In addition, one of the advanced Harry Potter manuscripts seen in the movie was later sold at auction for $586 on eBay and was also given to charity.
6. Lauren Weisberger, the author of novel, makes a cameo as the nanny of Miranda’s twins and can be seen when they’re reading the advanced copies of the Harry Potter books on the train.
Weisberger based the novel on her experiences working as Wintour’s assistant at Vogue. She was there for ten months before she left for other ventures.
7. In the novel, Andy’s boyfriend is Alex the teacher. In the film, he is Nate the chef.

In the book, Alex teaches at an elementary school in the South Bronx through Teach for America.
8. The character of Emily, played by Emily Blunt, was not originally British in the script.

Emily Blunt has also stated that she took the “Yeah I’m hearing ‘this’ and I want to hear ‘this'” line from watching a mother yelling at her child in the street.

9. Six years after Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt first worked together on the film, Tucci married Blunt’s sister, Felicity.

Emily Blunt was a bridesmaid at the wedding and neither Tucci nor his bride to be wore Prada.


10. It was Meryl Streep’s idea to have Miranda appear without any make-up in the scene where she opens up to Andrea about her divorce.

She also changed the original line at the end of the film from “Everyone wants to be me” to “Everyone wants to be us” during a table read and it stuck.
