When Meryl Streep dons sunglasses this big, you know you’re in for some major scenery chewing. But then you give her a countryfied Oklahoma drawl and have her act opposite Julia Roberts? We’re talking the heightened emotions — and heightened reality — of John Wells’ adaptation of August: Osage County, Tracy Letts’ 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
The first trailer for the film, set for release by The Weinstein Company on November 8 and undoubtedly being considered a major award contender, has now been released, and its a simmering bowl of family intrigues and resentments following the death of an Oklahoma clan’s T.S. Eliot-quoting patriarch (Sam Shepherd). On hand are a filled-out Abigail Breslin, a bearded Ewan McGregor, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Go ahead and watch the trailer. I’ll be spending the rest of the afternoon speculating whether Cumberbatch’s August: Osage County character is or isn’t Khan.
