Cannes Film Festival Recap: Movies, Fashion, And More

The joy of the silver screen was alive and well at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival. From May 17th to May 28th, actors, directors, and movie-makers all came together to celebrate the power and significance of movie-making in Cannes, France. From glamorous fashion, breathtaking films, and standing ovations, here are the most HollyGood moments from this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Top Gun: Maverick soared at Cannes Film Festival

The film festival welcomed Tom Cruise with open arms during Top Gun: Maverick’s premiere at the festival on May 18. As the actor walked the red carpet, French fighter jets flew over in commemoration of the film. Festival president Pierre Lescure honored Tom Cruise with a Palme d’Or— a film award that has been only granted to 15 artists.

During his honorary tribute, Tom Cruise shared his adoration for movie-making. “Thank you for being here. We’re here for you,” he said in his speech reported by Deadline. “I make these movies for all of you. I’m of you in ever meeting, in every moment. Especially in Cannes, you love movies.”

Hollywood stars stunned on the Cannes red carpet

Cannes also serves as a fashion runway for the stars as actors walked along the red carpet. While many artists showed off their fashion taste, here are some of the best looks from the festival.

Anne Hathaway shined in various pieces at this year’s Cannes from an Armani Privé gown to a Gucci blue mini dress. It seems like she took a lot of advice from her Devil Wears Prada days to make her mark on the red carpet.

Cannes Film Festival brought endless creative movies

While the festival brought blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis, it also gave buzz to international works and documentaries. Cannes premiered a range of genres from fantasy in Three Thousand Years of Longing, thrillers like Korean film Decision to Leave, sci-fi horror Crimes of the Future, and period dramas like Armageddon Time

With all these new movies, it’ll be interesting to see which ones make the Oscar list in 2023.

Cannes audience gave Elvis a standing ovation

One of the most anticipated movies of the summer, Elvis, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to the delight of audiences. After the film debuted on the Cannes stage, the movie received a 12-minute standing ovation where star Austin Butler, director Baz Luhrmann, Tom Hanks, and Priscilla Presley stood amongst the crowd.

The movie proved to be a hit with the Cannes audiences, and hopefully will be with all moviegoers when it hits theaters on June 24, 2022.

As the 75th Annual Cannes comes to an end, we are reminded of the beautiful and significant power of movies.
