With his new film Fair Game set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, Doug Liman is weighing his options for the future. Deadline New York reports that he’s circling a long developing remake of the 1966 caper comedy Gambit, which starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine as a dapper English cat burglar who enlists the aid of a Eurasian dancer to help him in a scheme to grab an age-old artifact from the palace of a powerful Middle Eastern tycoon. When their plan goes awry, they are forced to do anything it takes to come out on top.
Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script for the redo, which producer Mike Lobell has been trying to make for years. It’s not yet confirmed that Liman will commit to the film, as his success this past decade with The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Jumper has made him an in-demand filmmaker. He’s currently attached to multiple projects, including an untitled moon mission movie with Jake Gyllenhaal locked to star in, The Three Musketeers (which may end up going to Paul W.S. Anderson) and a sequel to his sci-fi hit Jumper.
While he waits for a final distribution deal for Fair Game (starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn) to come through, Liman will have to decide where to focus his energy.
