On a scale of 1 to 10, my excitement for the upcoming Muppets movie is at 11. First and foremost, one of the writers and stars of the film is none other than Jason Segel. Besides being awesome, he also knows his way around a puppet production. (Remember his vampire musical from Forgetting Sarah Marshall?) Now, word has it that funnyman Ricky Gervais and the lovely Emily Blunt have added their names to the star studded cast.
Though Gervais may steer a little more towards the Night at the Museum side of his humor for this kid-friendly film instead of leaning toward the raunchier stuff we’ve enjoyed on Extras and his stint on Louis, we can be sure that his involvement can only be beneficial to the film’s already long celeb roster.
Blunt, while more recently praised for her work in serious roles like as Queen Victoria in last year’s The Young Victoria, made her way onto the Hollywood radar after making us giggle in The Devil Wears Prada. Plus, she’s married to The Office’s John Krasinski, so I’d hope she’s picked up a bit of his wit as well.
Cameos have always been a beloved trademark of Muppet movies, and filmmakers are serious about making sure this reincarnation of the old films keeps Muppet die-hards happy. The Brits are in good company; the cast already includes Jack Black, Rashida Jones, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis (who I’m pretty sure could be in any comedy he wants these days), Donald Glover (mini-fist pump), and Danny Trejo (yes, you’re reading that right). I don’t think I could have picked a better group of actors to pal around with fuzzy puppets for an hour and half on the big screen. I have a feeling I’m going to love this movie more than Gonzo loves his chickens.
