So Sienna Miller is set to star in Rachid Bouchareb’s new film Just Like a Woman. Bouchareb is an Algerian filmmaker who has been nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar three times (including this past week’s ceremony where his film Outside the Law was nominated). His work is “honest and raw” and Miller describes him as “(someone) who understands the medium of film in a way that’s not manipulative.” His films often focus on controversial subjects, for example last year’s Cannes Film Festival saw protesters marching over his depiction of the Algerian fight for in independence in the 50’s.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that’s all well and good, but I’ll get to the good stuff. Miller is going to play a belly dancing housewife who travels to Las Vegas to enter a dancing competition. Socially conscious films are important and everything, but belly dancing is really important too and Miller should be able to bring a certain, ummm… gravitas to the role. Not to mention the fact that if it is a competition there will be even more belly dancing beyond Miller and my head can’t even comprehend that. Let’s get this made already!
