‘The Fighter’ Trailer Beefs It Up

Oh my god! A remake of Rocky!

Oh wait. Nevermind. It’s actually the trailer for The Fighter, the upcoming boxing film directed by David O. Russell starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.

The clip features Marky Mark as boxer “Irish” Micky Ward. His brother Dickie Eklund, played by Bale, is his trainer. After an unsuccessful first fight by Ward, Eklund gets tossed in jail because of trouble with the law and Ward wants to give up boxing. After a bunch of dramatic music, Ward gets inspiration from his love interest (Amy Adams) and goes on to be successful (we assume).

With all the feel-good moments and dramatic tones of the trailer, we can’t help but wonder what the heck is going on. David O. Russell — the man behind I Heart Huckabees and Three Kings — isn’t known for straightforward, literal (or inspiring) films. Maybe he’s changing his ways? But still, with all the gray hooded sweatshirt wearing and drama-filled bar fighting in this trailer for The Fighter — we can’t help but wonder when Sly Stallone is gonna show.
