Bedroom hair — big, bouncy waves — has always been considered sexy. The world’s most desired woman, from Brigitte Bardot to Gisele Bundchen, have made it their staple style. “Historically, its been a very cinematic look – having just rolled out of bed looking mussed-up and glamorous,” says hair stylist Allison Woodruff of Marie Robinson Salon in NYC. But with trends moving away from long cuts and perfectly coiffed styles, bedroom hair is getting a wakeup call. “Soft, polished hair had its day,” says Woodruff, whose clients include Parker Posie, Edie Falco and Karen Elson. “Smooth blowouts are just so boring.”
Instead, trendsetters like Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Mandy Moore are sporting a fresher, edgier version of the look: intentionally disheveled strands. We’re calling it ‘Just Effed Hair’. “It’s bedroom hair – the day after,” says Woodruff. “It’s a lived-in, slept-in look that’s cool, low-key and really sexy.”
Of course, the trick is to make sure your hair is mussy — not a hot mess. “You don’t want to look like you gave up,” laughs Woodruff. “The goal is casual glamour.” Her advice is to do it on second day hair, when strands have a little extra oil on the roots. “That will give the style shine and softness to make it look luxe, not trashy.”
Beyond The Row and Woodruff teamed up to create a tutorial on how to achieve this of-the-moment-mane.
