bio: Spanish director Pedro Almodovar was known early in his career for making comedies with international appeal like Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. With 1995’s The Flowers of My Secret, however, he departed from the light and amusing and headed into darker territory, a trend that continued through 1999’s popular All About My Mother, which won the director’s prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year. With Talk to Her, Almodovar makes his strongest inroads to American sensibilities yet; the film won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film and has earned several other foreign language film awards.
