DO IT TODAY: ‘Away We Go’

Away We Go
(Friday, June 5, 2009)

Sam Mendes likes to direct families. American Beauty: dsyfunctional. Road to Perdition: dsyfunctional. Revolutionary Road: Heck yeah, it was dysfunctional. Away We Go: Surprisingly, this family unit sorta works (they at least try). John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) are boyfriend ‘n’ girlfriend, Burt ‘n’ Verona, still digesting the news that they’ve made a baby together. To Burt, “baby” means, “I better propose to her.” He does this in earnest, and Verona all but turns him down all upteen times. Instead, they embark on an even bigger decision: moving closer to future grandparents (free babysitting, natch). The sweet, vulnerable couplet embark on a road trip, but when a dinner at Burt’s ‘rents (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara) goes awry, well … away they go again. Back on the road. They realize — with plenty of unsolicited baby advice from crunchy hippie moms like Maggie Gyllenhaal along the way — hello, we can live anywhere. But with an oyster of choices, how are Burt and Verona supposed to choose?
