Tuesday: ‘American Idol’

[IMG:L]American Idol — 8/7c on Fox

It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for on American Idol–that is, until tomorrow night rolls around, and every Tuesday/Wednesday thereafter until May 21.

After sitting through four weeks of auditions that featured the typical blend of high and low notes–both literally and figuratively, of course–the real “competition” aspect of Idol begins this week, Hollywood Week.

Throughout the audition process, SimonRandy and Paula are rather liberal with the “You’re going to Hollywood” golden tickets, but Hollywood Week marks the point at which they, and prospective contestants, buckle down and get serious.

The countless teen- and twentysomethings will be whittled down to 24 by the time Hollywood Week ends, and it’s more or less Idol’s boot camp to help take budding singers to their promised land of, well, exposure–because merely winning the show does not guarantee huge record sales (isn’t that right, Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks?).

If the singers thought Simon was harsh, Paula was melodramatic, or Randy overused the word “dawg” during auditions, they’re in for a rude awakening this week!
