Is Bridesmaids funnyman Chris O’Dowd looking for a little Oscar bait? He may have found it in his new film, The Sapphires, the trailer for which was just released. The film is the newest acquisition for cinematic powerhouse The Weinstein Company, and features a cast of relative unknowns telling the true story of four aboriginal Australian ladies and their oft-drunk manager during the Vietnam War. The film has all the trappings of a feel-good comedy with a message, and its biggest asset is definitely O’Dowd.
From the trailer you get the basic gist of the issues the story will tackle: racism, the Vietnam War, overcoming adversity and hope: all framed around musical numbers of some big girl group hits, wrapped in a comedic bow. This is no Sparkle, you guys. And while it also isn’t Dreamgirls, it may have a similar effect on Oscar voters given what looks to be a touching and poignant portrayal of Big and Historical Issues. All for the greater good of supporting the troops in Vietnam. Heart and funnies! Can you ever go wrong if the two are done right?
The film does not yet have a release date, but we imagine it will get one fairly soon. What do you think of the trailer? Looking forward to catching The Sapphires? Sock it to us in the comments!
