Paz de la Huerta Will Not Be Returning to ‘Boardwalk Empire’

Paz de la HuertaThe last few episodes of the second season of Boardwalk Empire worked to slim down the cast quite a bit. The season finale especially left us with the removal of a particularly noteworthy member of our Atlantic County family, leaving us to fear the eventual loss of some of our other favorites on the HBO series. Apparently, these fears are coming true rather quickly: it was announced today that Paz de la Huerta, who played Lucy Danziger—former lover of Nucky Thompson and mother of the unbalanced Detective Nelson Van Alden’s child—will leave the show.It is reported that series’ producers chose not to accept de la Huerta’s contract option, leaving her character’s fate a mystery. However, it is not a huge shocker to hear that we wouldn’t be seeing de la Huerta anymore, given her character’s sudden abandonment of her child at the end of the second season. Van Alden’s relocation to Cicero, Illinois, with his daughter also suggests that he won’t be in much contact with Lucy any further.

The relationship resultant of the pair’s first night together took a heavy emotional toll on both parties, Lucy especially. Season 2 saw the character slip into a devastating depression that made many viewers wonder just how much longer she’d be able to hold on. Shortly after she gave birth to a baby girl, Lucy disappeared, leaving Van Alden the sole guardian of young Abigail.

Clearly, Boardwalk Empire has a no-holds-barred policy on characters it will kill off. The only individual I’d deem safe for now is Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson…but then again, I wouldn’t have predicted some (or any) of the deaths at the end of Season 2.

All this comes on the heels of the announcement that Bobby Cannavale will be joining the show as an enemy of some kind to Nucky.
