Wednesday night’s debut of The Wayne Brady Show, which some TV columnists compared with the traditional summertime variety shows of the ’60s and ’70s, drew an 8.0 rating and a 14 share in the 8:00 hour, beating the competition handily. The two back-to-back half-hour episodes of the series starring the Whose Line Is It Anyway? costar marked a huge improvement over ABC’s previous occupants of the time period. Nevertheless, NBC again won the night, thanks to reruns of its top dramas, The West Wing at 9 p.m. (7.5/12) and Law & Order at 10 p.m. (9.1/15).
