Eminem granted Aussie visa

Controversial rapper Eminem has been granted a visa to tour Australia after he promised to be on his best behavior this month.

The Australian Family Association showed concern about the artist performing in the country ever since tentative tour dates were announced in late May. Members believe that Eminem’s offensive lyrical content and his chainsaw-wielding act are inappropriate, Reuters reports.

Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock agreed on Wednesday to grant Eminem a visa, saying the document carried the responsibility of “respect for our multicultural society and values.”

Ruddock also said that Eminem should avoid causing any discord with the Australian community to the point of causing a disturbance. If that occurs, his visa will be canceled.

Bill Meuhlenberg, the Australian Family Association secretary, told Reuters that he was disappointed the rapper would perform in the country, and urged young fans to steer clear of Eminem.

“Given the nature of the content and lyrics we are trying to keep the young people out of these concerts,” Meuhlenberg said.

Australian authorities are considering making Eminem’s Victoria and New South Wales performances on July 26 and July 27 an 18 years-old-plus show.

In related news, safety inspectors will attend a rehearsal of Eminem’s Astoria theater show on Aug. 23. According to Westminster City Council spokeswoman, Ivor Jones, inspectors want to make sure the rapper’s chainsaw-wielding act meets safety regulations.

“They [inspectors] have the power to halt the show mid-concert if necessary if something dangerous to the public is going on,” Jones told Reuters. “But we are not out to spoil anyone’s fun. Our paramount concern is the safety of the performer and the audience.”
