The Rev. Jerry Falwell issued a statement Monday, apologizing for remarks that he made on Pat Robertson‘s 700 Club last week in which he blamed numerous groups, including “pagans … abortionists … feminists … the gays and the lesbians … the ACLU, [and] People for the American Way” for contributing to last week’s events in New York.
At the same time, however, he maintained that his remarks were misinterpreted by a “secular media and audience.” The Rev. Pat Robertson, who on the original program expressed his agreement with Falwell, issued a news release in which he called the remarks “totally inappropriate.” Robertson‘s program is carried by the Fox Family Channel, which was recently purchased by the Walt Disney Co.
