Mariah Carey undergoes psychiatric care

Pop diva Mariah Carey is now under psychiatric care after she checked herself into an undisclosed New York hospital last week because of an “emotional and physical breakdown,” her spokeswoman Cindi Berger told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“She has suffered an emotional and physical breakdown…she is under psychiatric care,” Berger said.

Berger denied tabloid reports that Carey tried to commit suicide as a result of splitting up with her boyfriend, Latin singer Luis Miguel, but confirmed that the singer had suffered cuts on her body.

“She did break some dishes and glasses, and she may have stepped on them,” Berger said.

Carey’s mother, Patricia, made the 911 call to New York State Police, Entertainment Tonight reported.

Carey, 31, left two messages on her official site before her hospitalization, complaining to fans that she was being overworked and receiving little attention from her new record label, Virgin Records. She also commented on wanting to close her management company to take a break.

Carey, who is divorced from Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola, is currently dating Miguel. Miguel has not visited the singer in the hospital, but does calls her management expressing concern.

Carey has cancelled all public appearances, including her headline performance at MTV 20th birthday party on Wednesday.

Glitter, marking Carey’s first leading role in a film, opens at the end of the month. She has said that the rock ‘n’ roll fable, about a struggling young singer’s rise to fame in the 1980s, is not autobiographical.

Carey’s latest single, “Loverboy,” is taken from the film’s forthcoming soundtrack.

In April, Carey signed with Virgin Records after departing Columbia Records, a label she had been with since the start of her career. In a deal that will give her $20 million per album, Glitter will be the first album released under the new label.
