Newcomers fare poorly at box office

All three new additions to the box office turned out to be disappointments over the weekend as Universal’s American Pie 2 remained in first place for a second week, despite losing 53 percent of its opening-week business. Paramount’s Rat Race premiered in third place with $11.7 million; Universal’s Captain Corelli’s Mandolin opened in sixth place with $7.2 million; and American Outlaws took the eighth position with $4.9 million. The top twelve films grossed $102.3 million, up 19 percent from a year ago when studios were delaying the release of many of their films until after the Summer Olympics.
