DC Studios is exploring a darker side of its superhero universe with Clayface, a horror-focused film centered on one of Batman’s most unusual villains. Blending psychological suspense, graphic body horror, and comic-book mythology, the movie offers a different approach to the DC Universe. Whether you know the character from the comics or are discovering him for the first time, here’s everything to know about Clayface before watching.
Who Is Clayface?
Clayface has appeared in several forms throughout DC Comics history. One of the earliest versions, Basil Karlo, debuted in Detective Comics #40 in 1940 as an actor who becomes a criminal after his career takes a devastating turn.
The film instead focuses on Matt Hagen, another version of the character who originally gained shape-shifting abilities after encountering a mysterious substance. For the movie, Hagen is reimagined as an aspiring Hollywood star whose pursuit of success takes a horrifying turn.
What Is Clayface About?
Starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen and Naomi Ackie as scientist Dr. Caitlyn Corr, Clayface follows an actor whose promising career is destroyed after a violent encounter leaves him disfigured. Seeking a way to restore his appearance, Hagen undergoes an experimental treatment that produces increasingly disturbing results.
As his body begins transforming into a clay-like substance, Hagen struggles to maintain control of his identity. His desperation ultimately leads him down a dangerous path of revenge.
A Darker Take on a DC Villain
Directed by James Watkins, known for Speak No Evil, the film features a screenplay by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Its creative team signals a shift toward unsettling imagery, psychological tension, and graphic physical transformations rather than traditional superhero spectacle.
How Does Clayface Connect to the DCU?
Although the movie tells a story that can stand on its own, Clayface is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s interconnected DC Universe. It also explores the character Matt Hagen,
who appears in the animated series Creature Commandos, expanding his backstory within the franchise.
