S11E15: I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, there are too many good people this year. That’s why when the first Idol results show of the year boiled it down to the bottom four, heartbreak was sure to follow. This time, however, the show made the judges do the dirty work. America doesn’t have to bear the burden this time, but now that it’s out of our hands, can we be happy with the result?
After a fantastic evening of some of the toughest songs in the business — Whitney Houston for the ladies and Stevie Wonder for the boys — Idol pit the sexes against each other. By the end of the results show, we were shown the bottom guy and the bottom girl, at which point the judges pulled an X-Factor and decided whose dreams were over instead of leaving it to the votes.
In true Idol fashion, they kept it dramatic by bringing the bottom four to the stage and making them wait. Shannon Magrane, Jermaine Jones, Elise Testone, and Jeremy Rosado stood quaking like weepy little leaves while Ryan held their fate in his hands.
We finally learned that Shannon was safe. Though she completely botched her rendition of the ridiculously difficult Whitney ballad “I Have Nothing,” viewers have seen enough to know she’s got the chops but her nerves did her in. Plus, she’s fresh-faced and gorgeous. That can’t hurt.
Next, Jermaine was able to breathe a sigh of relief. While he doesn’t have a voice that necessarily appeals to a wide audience, he’s infinitely likable and there’s a lot of character within his voice to suss out. He’s an enigma and it’s not time for his journey to end just yet.
Finally, we get the final two: Elise and Jeremy. When the judges had to decide, they remorsefully chose Elise to stay. But was she the right choice? Based on their last performances, Elise was a bit messier than Jeremy. But even so, her voice shows more character than his sweet little number. Jeremy has gone as far as he can go. He’s the sweet guy with the sweet voice, but it takes more than that to win. Plus, he’s been at the bottom twice and we’ve only had two weeks of live shows. America’s not curious about what else he can do, and it seems that the judges weren’t either. Elise still has some growing to do. We’re still trying to figure out who she is, and with a voice like hers, she deserves a little more time to help us understand her.
Do you think the right person went home?
