Someone should have told Fashion Star contestant Nicholas Bowes that making fun of Jessica Simpson for being a ditz has gone out of style — along with discriminating against the ladies. In this clip from the upcoming NBC reality competition, Simpson, who serves as judge along with John Varvatos and Nicole Richie, critiques Bowes’ poorly-styled creation. “I think it’s a very fashion-forward piece,” he retorts. “If you understood what’s going on right now, you’d probably understand that that’s what’s going on right now in men’s fashion.”
He follows up the burn by explaining that he shouldn’t have to listen to a woman’s opinion on menswear. Simpson and Richie’s respective fashion lines only make tens of millions of dollars per year, so what do they know about clothing? Clearly it takes a man to appreciate the brilliance of putting zippers on a leather jacket.
Finally, Jessica offers up some sage thoughts on sexism (just in time for International Women’s Day): Disrespecting women when you’re standing in a room of full of female fashion experts isn’t a smart move.
