NBC Steals Time from ‘SNL’ and ‘The Tonight Show’ So We’ll Watch ‘The Voice’

The Voice NBCIn case you haven’t noticed, NBC really wants us to watch The Voice. Apparently, they want us to watch it even more than their other shows, namely The Tonight Show and SNL. Next Thursday, they’ll preempt the first 13 minutes of The Tonight Show and the first “few” minutes of the April 23 SNL will be cut as well to show viewers extended previews and scenes from their blind version of American Idol. (The judges only listen to voices while sitting in giant Doctor Evil chairs that spin; they don’t watch the performances, hence the name.)

If we weren’t already a little skeptical of the new show, this move is certainly raising some eyebrows. It seems that the network is banking a lot on this show that looks to nab the potential X Factor audience before Fox gets it going this summer. Either way, now that we know, is anyone else planning on tuning in a little later to avoid the infomercial? Aren’t they worried that folks will turn on the TV to see SNL and tune out as soon as they see an extended commercial instead? Maybe they know something we don’t. Maybe this is genius. But at the moment, it’s just a little strange and maybe a little overly anxious on the network’s part.
