Fresh-faced actress Nina Dobrev frequently surprised audiences with the depth she brought to her diverse characters. Bulgarian-born and raised in Canada, the Toronto native had already begun to make strides as a teen in such Canadian productions as filmmaker Sarah Polley's affecting drama "Away from Her" (2006). That same year, Dobrev connected with teens everywhere when she joined the cast of "Degrassi: The Next Generation (TEENick, 2001-15) as cheerleader and unwed mother Mia Jones for three seasons. During that period, the actress moonlighted in such diverse projects as the World War II drama "The Poet" (2007) and the teen-targeted musical comedy "The American Mall" (MTV, 2008). It was however, her casting as heroine Elena Gilbert - as well as her vampire look-alike Katherine Pierce - on the supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" (The CW, 2009- ) that earned Dobrev legions of new fans and a People's Choice Award. Only adding to the interest of the show's love triangle subplot was the fact that her co-star Ian Somerhalder had become Dobrev's real-life beau soon after the pair began working together. Balancing her series commitments with feature film work, the actress went on to deliver supporting performances in the erotic drama "Chloe" (2010) and campus thriller "The Roommate" (2011). Of particular merit was the critically-acclaimed indie teen drama "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012). With each new role, Dobrev proved herself one of the more capable talents in young Hollywood.
