The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought some of the biggest names in music to Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27. With major stars competing across genre, general and technical categories, the ceremony delivered plenty of Moon Person moments.
Madonna entered the ceremony as the night’s leading nominee with 13 nominations and finished as the biggest winner, taking home seven awards overall. Taylor Swift followed with several major honors of her own, including Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
Swift also received the first-ever Artist Director Honors and won Best Direction for “Opalite.” Madonna’s wins included Artist of the Year, Best Dance and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
The evening also recognized artists across pop, hip-hop, R&B, alternative, Latin, K-pop and country. LISA won Best Pop, Cardi B featuring Kehlani took Best Hip-Hop, Bruno Mars won Best R&B and Olivia Rodrigo earned Best Alternative.
BTS had a particularly successful night, winning both Song of the Year for “Swim” and Best K-Pop. Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist, while Ella Langley took home the Best Country award.

Madonna and Taylor Swift Lead the Night
Madonna’s seven total awards made her the ceremony’s biggest winner. Her victories included three awards presented during the televised ceremony: Artist of the Year, Best Dance and Best Collaboration. Her “Confessions II – The Film” also won multiple technical honors, including Best Cinematography and Best Choreography.
Swift’s night was highlighted by the biggest award of the evening. “The Fate of Ophelia” won Video of the Year, while “Opalite” earned Best Direction. Swift also made history by receiving the first-ever Artist Director Honors.

Beyond the night’s biggest names, the 2026 VMAs recognized artists from across the music industry. LISA won the first competitive award of the night with Best Pop, while Sienna Spiro was selected as Best New Artist through fan voting.
The ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and featured performances and special appearances from Madonna, LISA, RAYE, SOMBR, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey, Gunna, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION and Yung Lean. Nirvana also received the Video Vanguard Award.
With awards spanning major video honors, genre categories and technical achievements, the 2026 VMA winners represented a wide range of artists and music videos from the past year.
