Even more recently, Andra Day scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for this year’s 93rd Academy Awards.

According to the LA Times, Andra Day had been sleeping on her couch when she woke up to the news about her Oscar nomination. She said, “I just feel gratitude for everyone involved and for this moment.”

The EXCELLENCE though!

Andra Day released her debut album, Cheers to the Fall, in 2015. The following year, she received 2 Grammy nominations at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Cheers to the Fall was nominated for Best R&B Album and the single “Rise Up” was nominated for Best R&B Performance. Although she didn’t go home with the awards, she gave the public a taste of what her music career would look like.

She released a Christmas EP later in 2016, and since then has appeared in soundtracks from countless movies and television shows.

Andra Day in Film

The United States vs. Billie Holiday isn’t the first time Andra Day has appeared in a film. She played Minton’s singer in 2017’s Marshall (featuring Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, and Sterling K. Brown) and she voiced Sweet Tea in Cars 3.

“Stand Up for Something,” a song from Marshall featuring Common, became a hit and the music video for the song now has over 4 million views on YouTube.

Appearing in other shorts and music videos, Andra Day has been developing herself for on screen roles since 2016.

As a part of the #HamiltonMixtape LIVE #Ham4Ham show in December 2016, Andra Day performed the song “Burn.”
