Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella Shine in ‘My Old Ass’, A Witty and Thoughtful Coming-Of-Age Comedy

Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella star in this whimsical yet thoughtful comedy, exploring the life-altering summer before college when a teenage girl comes face-to-face with her older self.

My Old Ass takes a refreshingly laid-back approach to time travel, while melding a coming of age story with a midlife crisis. Elliott (Maisy Stella), an 18-year-old eager to escape home, meets her 39-year-old future self (Aubrey Plaza), who’s understandably jaded. Their first major encounter happens during a trippy evening fueled by mushroom tea, as the two versions of Elliott reflect on their shared, potentially changeable future.

Writer and director, Megan Park keeps the dialogue witty and brisk, setting up a playful, fantastical premise that unfortunately fades as the film shifts into a more familiar college-bound romance. The whimsical elements may linger like a dream, but the film settles into a more conventional narrative as it moves forward.

In the trailer, Plaza appears as the middle-aged version of herself while the present-day Elliott is experiencing a mushroom trip in the woods. Initially, the younger Elliott is skeptical, especially since they don’t resemble each other at all.

In an interview with Variety, Director Megan Park reflected on the themes of her film, saying, “There’s such a sadness, but a sweetness to that change and the passing of time,” as she reminisced about that pivotal moment between childhood and adulthood, when you sense life is about to change, but can’t yet define how.

During a campfire scene, Stella’s character questions, “You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” to which Plaza’s character swiftly replies, “Yeah, wear your retainer.”
