Two episodes into its second season, HBO’s Game of Thrones has already, er, finally been renewed for a third. That’s right — a third season wasn’t yet official!
The beloved series, based on George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, has been a ratings behemoth for HBO, kicking off its sophomore season April 1 to record viewership of 3.9 million and holding surprisingly steady (3.8 million) the following week.
“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season — and then surpassed them,” said the network’s programming president, Michael Lombardo.
