Game of Thrones cleaned up at the Emmys and fans are sad to see the series leave with two final shortened seasons. The series has pulled in a total of 38 Emmys in its lifetime so far and garnered a massive fan base. It’d make sense for HBO to stay in Westeros as long as possible, and it turns out they just might stay there a little longer than we thought.
Speaking backstage at the Emmys, Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke about the potential for a spinoff when the series ends — it just won’t include them.
Though Westeros has a rich history which provides plenty of material to draw upon, when asked about the potential for a spinoff, Benioff directed further questions to George R.R. Martin, the author of A Song Of Ice And Fire.
“You might want to ask George about that. It’s a great world that George created. It’s a very rich world. I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros. But for us, this is it.”
This aligns with what HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys said about the series a few months ago.
“We’ve talked about it. It’s something I’m not opposed to but it has to make sense creatively. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there are no concrete plans,” he said regarding a spinoff.
The Game Of Thrones books tell a very finite story with a definitive ending. Even thought the series has embellished upon the books, it’s still telling the story that Martin wrote. Still, even if that story has to end, it doesn’t mean a new one can’t be written. Unfortunately, it just won’t be done with the same showrunners who made the original Game Of Thrones so great.
Do you think a Game Of Thrones spinoff would be successful without Benioff and Weiss?
