The return of the Santa Ana winds out here in the west are digging up some primo news announcements about all things new and interesting in the television world. S.H.I.E.L.D. Character News!: Don’t stampede all at once to read this, Joss Whedon fans, but It seems as though some characters have been announced for the highly-anticipated television series. The details include a character named Skye who is in her “late-20s” and is “fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.” Angent Grant Ward is apparently “quite the physical specimen” and “quiet…with a bit of a temper,” which leads him to sometimes botch up “interpersonal relations.” Agent Althea Rice is a “hard-core soldier … with crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.” Agents Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons “spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.” Are any of you out there still breathing? More Murphy for the …Murphin’: Television wunderkind Ryan Murphy is not satisfied with having three highly-successful television programs currently on air. Oh no! Not enough for him! So the he of the must-not-ever-sleep-set (President of that club is still Ryan Seacrest) has decided to sell two more television shows to the waiting masses: a thriller at FOX and another comedy to NBC. He will be executive producing both shows. While the comedy premise is still under wraps, it is being reported that the thriller is titled Montauk and tells the story of a big historical American conspiracy in Montauk, Long Island. [Deadline]
The Record Set: Both of Showtime’s big premieres last night, Homeland and Dexter brought in big ratings numbers. It seems undeniable that the Homeland premiere–which was up 60 percent from last year’s premiere–got a nice boost from its multiple Emmy Awards. The show brought in 2.07 million viewers, with 1.73 million of that being in its first broadcast. The season 7 opener of Dexter also scored huge, the best premiere ratings in the series’ history: a total of 3.04 million, with 2.4 million being during the first broadcast. Tyler Perry Presents: OWN: The queen herself, Oprah Winfrey and her Oprah Winfrey Network have signed a multi-year, scripted TV deal with powerhouse Tyler Perry. The plan is for Perry to create two scripted shows to help the struggling network, with premiere dates scheduled in mid-2013. Now let’s all go dress up like Madea and jump on some couches! Or not. XENA Alert: Lucy Lawless is making her Parks and Recreation debut this Thursday on the show. Her character, Diane, is a single mom who’s totally going to maybe-possibly put her face on Ron Swanson’s face so everyone should tune in so we can all giggle and yell “GET SOME, Ron Swanson!” at the television together. Mockingbird Lane Might Be No More: It seems as though the kookily-cast and drawn-out Munsters reboot (retitled Mockingbird Lane) may not end up going to series. The show has been in development since the 2010-2011 season, but the high-concept (monsters!) show was maybe a bit too risky for NBC head person Bob Greenblatt. Someone go find Eddie Izzard a replacement job, though, because he really needs to be on television more. I’ll write something if anyone is looking for ideas! [Deadline]
