Tim Curry, the celebrated actor whose unforgettable performances made him a favorite across film, television and theater, has died at 80. Curry died Tuesday evening at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, according to his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz. His cause of death has not been announced.
Born in England, Curry began his professional acting career in the late 1960s after studying at the University of Birmingham. One of his earliest major opportunities came through the London stage production of Hair, where he crossed paths with Richard O’Brien.
That connection would eventually lead to the role that changed his career. In The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry portrayed Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the eccentric scientist at the center of the outrageous musical. His fearless performance transformed the character into a pop-culture icon and helped the movie develop its devoted cult following.
Curry’s talents extended far beyond Rocky Horror. He appeared as the hotel concierge in the beloved holiday sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and took on the terrifying role of Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It. His distinctive voice and dramatic delivery also made him a sought-after performer in animation and voice acting.
Curry experienced significant health challenges following a stroke in 2012 that affected his mobility. Nevertheless, he remained connected to his craft and continued to reflect on the joy he found in performing.
