Batter up baseball fans! Take Me Out is now playing on Broadway. As the production gears into full swing, here is everything you need to know about the show.

What is Take Me Out on Broadway about?

Darren must confront the struggles of being a gay person of color, facing homophobia and racism within a classic American institution.

Take Me Out Broadway cast

Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams makes his Broadway debut as center fielder Darren Lemming. “I have never done a play before,” he told Variety. “As a performer, I feel more emotionally evolved than I was a few years back — able and vulnerable and understanding of myself and my feelings.”

TV and film star Patrick J. Adams also stars on the Broadway stage for the first time as Darren’s friend and teammate, Kippy Sundstrom. Patrick is known for his role as lawyer Mike Ross in the tv legal drama Suits

Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays the role of accountant Mason Marzac. The Modern Family star is no stranger to Broadway, appearing in the Broadway revival of On The Town and The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee

Why you should see Take Me Out

If you’re a fan of baseball, love theater, or all of the above, Take Me Out is the show to watch. You’ll see on-screen stars Jesse Williams, Patrick J. Adams, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson in the flesh. The Hollywood Reporter praises Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s performance, writing, “he nails every laugh and brings a jolt of nervous energy each time he shows up. His emergence from terminal awkwardness to ecstatic, zero-fucks-given transport is the endearing heart of the play.”

Like the review says, Take Me Out brings some humor. However, it’s also able to balance the problems of homophobia, racism, and toxic masculinity within a classic American sport. Baseball isn’t just throwing and hitting balls. It’s more than that.
