CNN news anchor Bernard Shaw announced Friday that he is retiring from TV news on Feb. 28.
Shaw, 60, said that he planned to leave his workplace of 20 years to write books and spend time with his family.
In his long career, Shaw has covered a variety of historic events including live reporting from Baghdad, Iraq, in the Persian Gulf War in 1991; the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing of a federal office building; and the impeachment of President Clinton in 1998 and his Senate acquittal the next year.
In addition, Shaw has covered U.S. presidential campaigns, moderated a number of debates and anchored election night coverage. He won an Emmy in 1996 for his coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing.
In a statement, Shaw said: “I am stepping back from the table to write books, including an autobiography. Harder than entering this business is leaving it, and leaving CNN, especially after 20 years here. But, you know, some roses are fragrant. And as a gardener, I want to grow and smell them more, when I’m not writing.”
