Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are calling on the Department of Education and the National Institute of Health to conduct a study on the impact of violent entertainment on kids, according Variety. Two U.S. House members also introduced legislation that would force movies, music, television and video games to come up with a uniform labeling system containing age limits and content descriptions. The legislation would group the entertainment industry in the same category as cigarettes in terms of advertising and labeling rules. The study is supported by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass), chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn), who recently introduced a bill that would give the Federal Trade Commission limited authority to go after Hollywood for deceptive advertising, Variety reports.
Hollywood’s claim that no direct correlation can be made between violence in entertainment and actual acts of violence in today’s youth was upheld by a report issued by the U.S. surgeon general’s office earlier this year.
