“Jackass” Star Held in Swedish Jail

Steve-O, known for his outrageous stunts on the now-defunct MTV prankster series Jackass, admitted in a Swedish court Saturday that he had drugs in his hotel room, but denied smuggling the drugs into the country, The Associated Press reports.

“I had an ecstasy pill in my bag and I smoked marijuana in the hotel room. I admit to both of those crimes,” Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Glover, said during the hearing. But he said he was joking when he described swallowing a condom filled with marijuana and hashish to a Swedish newspaper and on his Web site.

“I apologize that my bad sense of humor has wasted so much of the Swedish taxpayers’ money,” Glover told the court.

Glover was arrested Thursday in Stockholm after he told a paper that he had swallowed a condom filled with marijuana prior to arriving in Sweden, which has some of Europe’s strictest anti-drug laws. He was touring the country with his own show, Don’t Try This at Home.

Glover also wrote on his Web site that he swallowed the condom and was “stoned as can be and overjoyed with the success” of the stunt, but was afraid it had got stuck.

The Stockholm district court ordered Glover held in jail until June 6, while a prosecutor prepares possible charges of drug smuggling and drug possession, the AP reports.

But Glover’s U.S. attorney Jason Berk said that to “suggest that Steve-O is a flight risk is almost humorous. This is a person whose whereabouts are known by the general public every day of his life.” He added that Glover wouldn’t endanger his career by becoming a fugitive.

Jackass, which featured cast members pulling stupid pranks and practical jokes, ran on MTV in 2000 and 2001. The feature film version of the show, Jackass: The Movie, was a box office success when it hit theaters in 2002.
