Zsa Zsa Gabor, the Hungarian actress best known for her furs, jewelry and long list of ex-husbands, was involved in a car crash Wednesday evening where she sustained serious head injuries, the Associated Press reports. Her husband Frederic von Anhalt, however, said she was improving Friday.
Gabor, 85, was initially in a coma when she was brought to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after the car she was riding in, driven by her hairdresser, hit a light pole on Sunset Boulevard.
“She’s getting better, she recovered a little last night,” von Anhalt said outside the hospital Friday, but he added that although the actress opened her eyes and appeared to respond to stimuli she was still not able to speak. Gabor also suffered from multiple broken bones, cuts and bruises.
The cause of the accident was not known. Gabor was apparently not wearing a seat belt, the Los Angeles Country Sheriff’s Department told AP. It appeared that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the crash.
Gabor, along with sisters Eva and Magda, emigrated from Hungary to the U.S. with their mother, Jolie, during World War II. Zsa Zsa first gained notoriety when she married hotel tycoon Conrad Hilton in 1942.
She has been married seven times since then, including to actor George Sanders and inventor Jack Ryan. Gabor has been married to von Anhalt since 1986.
