Purple Rain Broadway Musical Sets 2027 Debut With New Director & Creative Team

The highly anticipated Purple Rain stage musical is officially making its way to Broadway in 2027. Producers have announced that previews will begin on March 12, 2027, at the Majestic Theatre, with opening night scheduled for April 12. The announcement arrives on the 42nd anniversary of the release of Prince’s legendary 1984 film.

The Broadway production will feature several major creative changes following its world premiere in Minnesota last year. Tony Award-nominated director Saheem Ali has taken over directing duties, while playwright Peter Duchan will provide a newly written book for the musical. They replace the original creative leads as the production prepares for its Broadway debut.

The musical will showcase many of Prince’s biggest hits, including “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with You,” and “The Beautiful Ones,” bringing the beloved soundtrack to life on stage. Several members of last year’s creative team are returning, including choreographer Ebony Williams and music supervisor, arranger, and orchestrator Jason Michael Webb. Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will also continue serving as music advisors Casting has not yet been announced.

Producer Orin Wolf praised the new creative team, saying, “Prince is, without doubt, one of the rarest, most brilliant musicians we’ve ever had… It will be every bit as exciting for audiences today as it was when we first heard these songs on our boom boxes.”

Ali shared his excitement about joining the production, saying, “Prince was an icon, and Purple Rain is iconic… Our aim is not only to honor the legacy that Prince built, but to make his timeless music feel urgent and alive, passing it on to the next generation of fans who will make it their own.”

Based on the acclaimed film, Purple Rain tells the story of a rising Minneapolis musician whose passion, ambition, and music helped create one of the most influential soundtracks in entertainment history.
