There’s no casting audiences away from the multiplexes this weekend.
In the New Year’s holiday weekend that saw no new wide releases, Tom Hanks‘ “Survivor”-esque epic “Cast Away” held on to the top spot at the box office this weekend as expected with an estimated $31.1 million, hurling the film over the $100 million mark in only its second week of release, according to estimates from box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.
Coming in second for a second consecutive weekend is the sensitive male comedy “What Women Want” with $22.6 million. The Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt starrer has thus far grossed more than $110 million.

Elsewhere on the chart, Ang Lee‘s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” continued to wow audiences as the film gradually opens in more areas. The film took in an estimated $3.5 million over the weekend, and its total is $12.4 million so far.
Steven Soderbergh‘s much-hyped new film “Traffic” — which opened Wednesday in only Los Angeles and New York to qualify for the Oscars — pulled in a huge $303,588 total on only four screens.
